SYMPTOMS

Scenario 1

You have Spyware Doctor 5.5 or an earlier version of Spyware Doctor installed on the computer together with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). You install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). In this scenario, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The Windows XP SP3 installation stops responding during the "Running Processes after Install" part of the installation.
  • System performance becomes very slow, and you cannot start any programs.
  • When you restart the computer, you are prompted to roll back to Windows XP SP2.

Scenario 2

You have Spyware Doctor 5.5 or an earlier version of Spyware Doctor installed on the computer together with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). You disable Spyware Doctor, and then you successfully install Windows XP SP3. You enable Spyware Doctor, and then you try to uninstall Windows XP SP3. In this scenario, you experience the following symptoms:
  1. Windows XP SP3 stops responding during the uninstallation process.
  2. When you restart the computer by doing a hardware reset, Windows XP SP3 is uninstalled, and the computer is reverted to the previous state.

CAUSE

Spyware Doctor 5.5 and earlier versions of Spyware Doctor are not fully compatible with Windows XP SP3.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must disable Spyware Doctor 5.5 or earlier versions of Spyware Doctor before you install or uninstall Windows XP SP3. After you complete the installation or uninstallation of Windows XP SP3, you can re-enable Spyware Doctor.
