The Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) contains several changes that improve security, stability, and performance. This includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.

The Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) includes the following improvements.

Improvements for all Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac applications

  • Excel object type names are displayed correctly in the "Insert Object" dialog box for Word and for PowerPoint.
    This update fixes an issue that causes the names of Excel object types to display incorrectly when you open the Insert Object dialog box.
  • Font kerning for text in a shape, in a text box, or in a chart element adjusts correctly when you turn it off.
    This update fixes an issue that prevents font kerning for text in a shape, in a text box, or in a chart element from adjusting correctly when you turn it off for text that uses some OpenType fonts, such as Corbel, Cambria, and Calibri.
  • PSD files that are inserted and that have layers appear as expected.
    This update fixes an issue that occurs if you select the Treat picture layers as separate objects check box when you insert a PSD file that contains multiple layers into an Office document. The issue causes the picture layers to be positioned incorrectly at the upper-left corner of the image boundary. Now, picture layers are positioned as expected, and the picture layers match their original positions in the PSD file that is inserted.
  • Lines with arrowheads appear as expected.

Improvements for Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac

  • Accuracy is improved when you check the grammar of Japanese text.
    This update fixes an issue that causes Word to incorrectly determine some Japanese text as grammatically incorrect.
  • Business card templates are available in "Publishing Layout" view.
    This update introduces a set of new business card templates that you can create by using the Publishing Layout view. The new templates are available under Business Cards in the Publication Templates tab of the Elements Gallery.
  • Changes to the wrapping style for Microsoft Equation objects and for Microsoft Graph Chart objects work correctly.

    For users of the Japanese version of Word 2008 or of the English version of Word 2008 that has Japanese features turned on, this update fixes an issue that causes slow performance when you type Japanese text or you use the arrow keys to move within Japanese text.

  • Reliability is improved when you scroll through a document window that displays multiple side-by-side pages.
    This update fixes an issue that causes the layout of a document to display incorrectly when the pages of the document are displayed side by side in a document window, and you scroll through the pages.

  • The "Reset All" button in the "Grammar Settings" dialog box works correctly.
    This update fixes an issue that prevents the Reset All button on the Grammar Settings dialog box in the Spelling and Grammar panel of Word preferences from resetting all grammar settings. This button now works as expected.
  • The "Restart Numbering" option works correctly for numbered lists.

Improvements for Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac

  • Chart formatting options are restored.
    This update restores the following chart formatting options that were available in earlier versions of Office for Mac:
    • The Custom Error Bars formatting option on the Error Bars panel for data series
    • The Invert if negative formatting option on the Fill panel for data series and for data points
    • The Tick Marks formatting options on the Ticks panel for chart axes
    • The Axis Labels entry box on the Select Source Data dialog box
  • Checks for compatibility issues are improved.
    This update improves Excel’s ability to warn you about potential compatibility issues in a workbook when you save the workbook in a file format that is incompatible with earlier versions of Excel. This includes versions of Excel for Windows.
  • Compatibility is improved. This update fixes several issues that prevent versions of Excel for Windows from opening and then correctly saving workbooks that were created in Excel 2008 for Mac. This update also improves compatibility with workbooks that follow the Open XML file format specification.
  • Currency cell formats are saved correctly.
    This update fixes an issue that causes Excel to incorrectly save the cell format for cells that use the Currency format to a cell format that uses the Number format. In particular, this issue affects users of non-dollar currency symbols.
  • The resize behavior of the formula bar is improved.
    This update changes the behavior of the formula bar when you move it or resize it from its default position under the menu bar. If you move or change the width of the formula bar, the change is retained, and the formula bar will no longer resize automatically to cover the full width of the screen, even if you move it back to its default position under the menu bar. To restore the automatic resize behavior, delete the com.microsoft.excel.plist preference file, and then restart Excel. Be aware that if you delete this preference file, all Excel preferences will return to their default settings.
  • Formulas in a calculated column adjust correctly when you insert or delete a dependent column on a ledger sheet.
    This update fixes an issue that causes the formulas in a calculated column to display a #REF! sheet error when a dependent column is deleted. In addition, the formulas in a calculated column will adjust to include a dependent column when the dependent column is inserted on the ledger sheet. Excel alerts you when you insert or delete a dependent column that will affect the formulas in a calculated column.
  • Hyperlink formatting is preserved when you open an Excel 97-2004 workbook.
    This update fixes an issue that causes Excel to remove hyperlink formatting from cells that contain hyperlinks when you open a workbook that is saved in an Excel 97-2004 file format.
  • Page breaks can now be dragged to new locations in Normal view.
    This update introduces an improvement that enables you to drag page breaks to new locations on a sheet when you view the sheet in Normal view. This improvement restores functionality that was available in earlier versions of Excel through page break preview. In Normal view, page breaks appear as dashed lines between rows and columns.

    This update fixes an issue that prevents PowerPoint from saving changes to the location of a movie file that is linked. If you fix a broken link to a movie file, and then you save the presentation, the link is still broken when you open the presentation again.
  • Display of content in the outline pane is improved.
    This update fixes an issue that causes text in the outline pane to display incorrectly. This issue makes it difficult to select text at the bottom of the outline pane.
  • Display and responsiveness is improved when you drag static guides.
    This update fixes an issue that makes it very difficult to drag a static guide to a different location on a slide. This update also fixes an issue that causes a light blue box to appear after you drag a static guide to a different location on a slide.
  • Display is improved when you switch to another application during a slide show.

  • Stability is improved for Microsoft Sync Services.
    This update fixes an issue that sometimes causes Microsoft Sync Services to close unexpectedly. For example, this issue may occur when Microsoft Sync Services tries to sync a calendar event that was saved as an .ics file, and the calendar event was imported into the Entourage calendar in Apple iCal.
  • Client-based certificate authentication is now supported for Exchange server accounts.

  • The definition file for junk e-mail protection is updated.
    This update improves the effectiveness of the Entourage junk e-mail filter by providing an updated definition file. The definition file is used to determine which e-mail messages should be treated as junk.
