INTRODUCTION

This article describes the grace period and the enforcement level of a subscription computer.
Note In this article, a computer that is running Windows XP Home Edition for Subscription Computers is known as a "subscription" computer.

MORE INFORMATION

When a subscription computer starts for the first time, the provisioning server generates a configuration packet, and the computer downloads the packet. The configuration packet contains parameters for the configuration of the subscription computer, such as the enforcement level and the grace period (in minutes).

The enforcement level of the subscription computer determines how much time that the computer can spend in reduced functionality mode (RFM). The following list shows the relationship between the enforcement level of the computer and the time that the computer spends in RFM:
No enforcement level set: Twenty hours of RFM time
Level 1: Ten hours of RFM time
Level 2 : Five hours of RFM time
Level 3 : Two hours of RFM time
Level 4 : One hour of RFM time
The grace period is the number of minutes that the subscription computer functions in normal mode (NM) when it has not received another subscription packet after the last packet’s expiration date. After the grace period, the computer enters RFM.

Both the enforcement level value and the grace period value are determined by the solution provider. They are preconfigured on the provisioning server, which is hosted by Microsoft, before the subscription computers are manufactured.

To see the enforcement level and the grace period of a subscription computer, type lpmtool –b at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
