The thesaurus feature does not function when the "Enable Search Term Stemming" option is enabled on a SharePoint site

SYMPTOMS

You have the Enable Search Term Stemming option enabled for the search results Web part, and you are using a custom thesaurus on a Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007 site or a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site. In this case, search results that match items in the expansion set are not returned.

For example, if you search for "Cars," documents are returned that have "Cars" in them. However, documents that have "Car" in them are not returned.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install one of the following hotfix packages, depending on the software that you are using:
  • SharePoint Server 2007
953471  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953471/ ) Description of the SharePoint Server 2007 post-2007 Microsoft Office servers Service Pack 1 hotfix package: June 5, 2008
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
953473  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953473/ ) Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 hotfix package: June 5, 2008

Limitation

This fix has a limitation. The thesaurus expansion is performed before the stemming function. This means that if you search for "Cars," documents are returned that have "Cars" or "Car" in them, but documents that have "bus" or other thesaurus equivalents to "Car" are not returned.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

APPLIES TO
