SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you cannot debug the DLL modules in an application if the application loads more than 500 DLL modules.

When this issue occurs, you experience one of the following symptoms:
  • You cannot set breakpoints in one or more modules.
  • The debug application encounters exceptions when it tries to load symbol files for more than 500 DLL modules.

CAUSE

There is a limitation (500) on the number of loaded symbol files in memory in Windows Server 2003.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must apply the hotfix, and then add a related registry entry to modify the maximum number of the symbols that can be loaded. To add the registry entry, follow the steps in the "Registry information" section.
