FIX: Duplicate data is written to other flat files in an SSIS package that contains a Foreach Loop container

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You create a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) package. The SSIS package contains a Foreach Loop container. The Foreach Loop container is configured to use the Foreach ADO enumerator. In the Foreach Loop container, you write data from a table to different destination flat files. The path of one of the flat files is read from a user variable. The path is invalid. In this scenario, duplicate data is written to the other flat files when the Foreach Loop container executes the next loop. However, no error is reported.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because, when a flat file destination component is executed in a Foreach Loop container, the Foreach Loop container does not clean up the state when an error occurs in the flat file destination component. Therefore, the succeeding iteration may generate duplicate data.

RESOLUTION

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. The SQL Server 2005 builds that were released after SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 was released
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add a script task to check whether the path of the destination flat file is valid before you write data to the destination flat file. For example, create a script task that contains the following code.
Public Sub Main()
        If Directory.Exists(Dts.Variables("Directory").Value.ToString()) Then
            Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success
        Else
            Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Failure
        End If
End Sub
If the path is valid, execute the regular data flow. If the path is invalid, execute the data flow that processes the error.
