Error message when you try to start the Async service in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0: "Exception while starting async service: MSCRMAsyncService"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Async service in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, you receive the following error message:
Exception while starting async service: MSCRMAsyncService -
System.InvalidOperationException: The requested Performance Counter is not a custom counter, it has to be initialized as ReadOnly.
Therefore, you cannot log on to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a performance counter is corrupted. The performance counter may be a Microsoft Dynamics CRM performance counter or a Windows performance counter.

RESOLUTION
