SQL Server 2000 and MSDE 2000 installers stop dependent services

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to determine services that depend on the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 service and on the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (also known as MSDE 2000) service.

SQL Server 2000 and MSDE 2000 updates that are not completed successfully may leave services that depend on the SQL Server 2000 service or on the MSDE 2000 service in a stopped state after installation. Be aware of the services that dependent on the SQL Server service or on the MSDE service before you install the update. Additionally, if the dependent services are not started after the update, restart the dependent services manually, or restart the computer

Note If you restart the computer, all dependent services that have a Startup Type of Automatic will be started in the correct order.

To determine services that depend on the SQL Server 2000 service and on the MSDE 2000 service on the computer that is running SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000, follow these steps:

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
1.Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then press ENTER.
2.In the list of services, double-click MSSQL$ (Instance_name).

Note The placeholder Instance_name represents the name that is given to the instance of SQL Server during the initial installation of SQL Server 2005.
3.In the MSSQL$ (Instance_name) Properties dialog box, click the Dependencies tab.
4.Note all services that appear in the The following system components depend on this service box. You may have to expand each item to determine hierarchical dependency.
