Improvements that are included in the update

The Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.1 Update includes the following improvements.

Improvements for all Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac applications

  • Stability is improved.

This update fixes an issue that causes Office 2008 applications to exit unexpectedly when you open or use Office 2008 applications.
  • Dates in a chart are displayed correctly in Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac and in Microsoft PowerPoint 2008 for Mac.

This update fixes an issue that causes the dates in a chart to change unexpectedly when you open a Word 2008 document or a PowerPoint 2008 presentation that contains a chart.

Improvements for Word 2008 for Mac

  • Spaces between words are preserved.

This update fixes an issue that causes spaces between words to be lost when you open a document that was created in or saved by Word 2008 for Mac or by Microsoft Office Word 2007.
  • Macros are preserved when you save a document that contains macros.

This update fixes an issue that causes OnOpen and OnClose macros not to run correctly in versions of Word for Mac and Word for Windows that support Visual Basic macros.

This issue occurs in the following scenario:
    • You use Word 2008 to open and to save a document that contains these macros.
    • You open the document in a version of Word that supports Visual Basic macros.
  • Word documents open correctly when you double-click the document or when you download the document from a Web site.

This update fixes an issue that prevents Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 (SP1) from opening Word documents when you double-click the document or when you download the document from a Web site. This update resolves this issue for document file types that are used most frequently.

However, after you install this update, Word 2008 continues to prevent a few older Word for Mac document file types from being opened when you double-click the document. This behavior occurs because these documents may pose a security threat.

This issue occurs when the document is saved in an Open XML Format such as .docx and then is saved in .doc format or is converted by the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac.
    • For Japanese users and for users of full-width characters, this update fixes an issue in Word 2008 that causes full-width characters in section tab titles to be displayed as underlines.
    • This update fixes an issue that causes Note Flags, such as check boxes and priority indicators, to be converted to pictures even when the document is opened again in Word 2008.
    • This update fixes an issue that causes SmartArt graphics to be converted to pictures even when the document is opened again in Word 2008.
  • Font size is preserved for text in tables.

This update fixes an issue that causes the font size to change unexpectedly for text in a table that is formatted with a table style or with the Autoformat feature.

This issue occurs when you save the document that contains the table in an Open XML Format and then reopen the document.
  • Reliability is improved when you save a document that contains an Area or Filled Radar chart in the .doc format.

This update fixes an issue that causes Word to display the following error messages:
Word was unable to save the document as the file type you specified.
A file error has occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disk is properly inserted and not defective.
This issue occurs when you try to save a document that contains an Area or Filled Radar chart in the .doc format that is used by the following products:

Improvements for Microsoft Excel 2008 for Mac

  • International decimal separators are accepted for error bars.

This update fixes an issue that causes Excel 2008 to reject the entry of international decimal separators in some Error Amount entry boxes. This issue occurs when you create error bars for a Line chart or for a Scatter chart.
  • Reliability is improved when chart data is updated.

This update fixes an issue that prevents charts from being updated correctly. This issue occurs when the chart uses data that is calculated by a function such as TODAY, RAND, RANDBETWEEN, INDIRECT, and OFFSET.
  • Excel workbooks open correctly when you double-click the workbook or when you download the workbook from a Web site.

  • Reliability is improved when you calculate or edit a formula.

This update fixes an issue that causes the following behavior in Excel 2008:
    • Excel 2008 does not calculate formulas when you open a workbook.
    • Excel 2008 unexpectedly displays the following error message when you edit or recalculate a formula:
There is a circular reference in an open workbook, but the references cannot be shown.
  • Embedded movies are no longer duplicated when you save a workbook in the .xls format.

This update fixes an issue that causes embedded movies in a workbook to be duplicated, one behind the other, in a workbook that is saved in the .xls format.

  • PivotTable reports are improved.

This update fixes several issues that cause problems when you work with PivotTable reports.
    • This update fixes an issue that causes Excel 2008 to exit unexpectedly in the following scenario:
      • You edit a formula that uses the GETPIVOTDATA function.
      • You then save the workbook in the Excel Binary Workbook (.xlsb) format.
    • Performance is improved when you open a workbook that contains a very large PivotTable report, such as a report that has more than 32,000 rows.
    • Compatibility is improved when you save a workbook that contains a PivotTable report in the Excel Workbook (.xlsx) format.
    • This update fixes an issue that prevents you from selecting cells in a PivotTable report by dragging the mouse pointer in a lateral motion across the PivotTable report.

Improvement for PowerPoint 2008 for Mac

  • Performance is improved.

This update fixes an issue that causes Microsoft PowerPoint 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 (SP1) to take a long time to open a presentation. This issue occurs when the presentation contains text that uses certain fonts, such as fonts in the “DFP” family.

Improvement for Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac
