Action

Uninstalling a SNMP Agent from Server 2008 via MSI package that was used originally to install said SNMP Agent may cause an Event ID: 1500 to be subsequently logged in the System Event Viewer logs.

Result

An Event ID: 1500 thrown by SNMP subsequently under certain circumstances after removing the SNMP Agent via the original MSI based installer used to add said Agent.

Cause

This happens when removing the SNMP Agent removes the only subkeys listed under:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SNMP\Parameters\ExtensionAgents

If this is true, then our MSI installation technology may prune the ExtensionAgents key.

Please note that this is expected behavior.

Resolution

Re-adding the ExtensionAgents key to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SNMP\Parameters\ will remove the Event ID 1500 error in the System event log from SNMP.

Also, placing a permanent Dummy key in the ExtensionAgents key before uninstalling the ExtensionAgents would alleviate the issue.

You can review more on adding a dummy value with the "permanent" flag at the URL listed below:

Annotated Excerpt:
The (MSI) installer removes a registry key after removing the last value or subkey under the key. To prevent an empty registry key from being removed when uninstalling, write a dummy value under the key you need to keep and enter + in the Name column.
