Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You are running a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 site server.

  • On the site server, you have the following registry subkeys:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER\Multisite Component Servers

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SMS\Components\SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER\Component Servers

  • The Multisite Component Servers registry subkey has more direct child subkeys than the Component Servers registry subkey.

  • You try to install Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1. Or, you try to reinstall a specific component of Configuration Manager 2007 after an unsuccessful installation attempt.

In this scenario, the SMS_Site_Component_Manager service stops unexpectedly during the installation process.

Additionally, the following events are logged on the site server.

Note This problem may also occur after you install Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1. This problem is most likely to occur in the following configuration:

  • All components of Configuration Manager 2007 except the Configuration Manager database are installed on the site server.

  • The Configuration Manager database is hosted in a clustered instance of Microsoft SQL Server.
