SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a database connection to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 by using the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) design tools, you may receive the following error message:
This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Visual Studio 2005 SP1 update that provides support for SQL Server 2008. This update lets you use Visual Studio 2005 SP1 together with SQL Server 2008.

Features

After you install this update, you can use the following Visual Studio 2005 features together with SQL Server 2008:
  • Server Explorer

    Note You can use Server Explorer to connect to SQL Server 2008. You can view and edit some database objects in Visual Studio 2005 SP1. For example, you can view and edit stored procedures and table data in Visual Studio 2005 SP1.
  • SQL Server common language runtime (CLR) projects

    Note You can create SQL Server CLR projects and then deploy the SQL Server CLR projects to SQL Server 2008.
  • Transact-SQL debugging
  • SQL Server CLR debugging
  • Dataset Designer
  • Data sources
  • Data binding

    Note You can use the data binding features in client projects and in Web projects.
After you install this update, you cannot use the following Visual Studio 2005 SP1 features together with SQL Server 2008:
  • You cannot create or edit the table schemas in Visual Studio Table Designer or in database diagrams.

    To create and to edit the table schemas in SQL Server 2008, use Table Designer in SQL Server Management Studio. To obtain SQL Server Management Studio, follow these steps:
    1. Install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition.
    2. During the installation, install the SQL Server Management Tools from the feature tree.
    3. After the installation is complete, start SQL Server Management Studio.
    4. Connect to the instance of SQL Server to which the database is attached.
  • You cannot use Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Team Edition for Database Professionals together with SQL Server 2008.

System requirements

  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, or Windows XP Service Pack 3
  • Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
  • Access to a running instance of SQL Server 2008
  • Any language version of Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Professional Edition or Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Team System Editions

Known issue

When you uninstall this update on a computer that is running Windows Vista, you may receive the following error message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
To work around this issue, provide the Visual Studio 2005 installation media, or provide the installation network location.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you install this update.
