SYMPTOMS

You try to delete an empty folder on a network share that is hosted on a Windows Server 2003-based server or on a Windows XP Professional x64 Edition-based server. When you do this, you may receive the following error message:
Cannot delete <DIRECTORY>: It is being used by another person or program.
This problem occurs when hotfix 950298 is installed on the server.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You must restart the server after you apply this hotfix.

To work around this problem, restart the server, and then delete the empty folder.
