on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you try to use the Encrypting File System wizard to create a self-signed certificate that can be stored in a smart
card. When the wizard reaches the Insert Smart Card page,
you see the smart card reader in the list. However, the OK
button is unavailable, and the Smart card status field displays the
following error message: The card is being shared by
another process. However, the card is not the one being requested, and cannot
be used for the current operation. Note If this is the first smart card that is used on the computer, this problem does not occur. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Encrypting File System wizard uses only the
cryptographic service provider (CSP) that is associated with the first smart card
that is listed in the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Calais\SmartCards RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
