You cannot connect to an ADAM instance in Windows Server 2003 by using the Secure Sockets Layer 3 protocol together with a certificate that is larger than 1024 bytes

Consider the following scenario:

• You are running an Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) instance on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
• You connect to the ADAM instance by using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 3 protocol.
• The certificate that you use for the SSL 3 protocol is larger than 1024 bytes.

In this scenario, the connection to the ADAM instance resets instead of being established.

Note A connection to a Windows Server 2003 domain controller of the same configuration can be established successfully.

This problem occurs because ADAM incorrectly handles the certificate data during the handshake process.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
