Stop error message in Windows Server 2008, in Windows Vista, or in Windows Vista SP1: "0x000000D1"

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following Stop error message:

• The four parameters in this error message vary, depending on the computer's configuration.
• Not all "0x000000D1" Stop errors are caused by this problem.

Typically, this issue occurs on a multiprocessor computer.

This problem occurs because the Netio.sys file prematurely releases a lock. After the lock is released, the Netio.sys file tries to modify a list that was protected by the lock. This behavior corrupts the list and triggers the Stop error.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

These files and their associated .cat (security catalog) files are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The .cat files are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
