You cannot start the SQL Server service of SQL Server 2008 after you follow the instructions in SQL Server 2008 Books Online to move the Resource database files

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You follow the instructions in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Books Online that describe how to move the Resource database files in SQL Server 2008. When you try to start the SQL Server service after you move the Resource database files, the SQL Server service cannot start. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details.
Notes
  • The instructions are documented in the "Moving the Resource Database" section of the "Moving System Databases" topic in SQL Server 2008 Books Online.
  • The Binn folder is in the following location:
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.InstanceName

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, return the Resource database files to the Binn folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
