You receive a "The Collation specified by SQL Server is not supported" error message when you try to install SQL Server 2008

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you receive the following error message:
The Collation specified by SQL Server is not supported.
Retrying the installation fails, and canceling the action causes Setup to fail. You also see information that resembles the following in the Detail.txt file:

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the specified collation is not supported in this version of Windows and because of a limitation in how validation of the collation is performed in different operating systems.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, do not use a collation that is not supported by the operating system on which you are installing SQL Server 2008.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

The following new collations are supported in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008. These collations may cause the problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section when the collations are used in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP:

  • Breton
  • Corsican
  • Dari
  • Japanese_Bushu_Kakusu
  • Khmer
  • Lao
  • Nepali
  • Pashto
  • Tamazight
  • Upper Sorbian
  • Yakut
