Corrupted characters appear in the Subject field or in the Location field of a recurring calendar item after a user adds DBCS characters to a field in a meeting occurrence by using an Outlook 2002 client

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • A user who is using a Microsoft Office Outlook 2002 client creates a recurring calendar item.
  • The user changes the Subject field or the Location field of a meeting occurence so that it now includes DBCS characters.
  • Another user uses a Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 client to view this user's Free/Busy information by using the Group Schedule view.
In this scenario, corrupted characters appear in the Subject field or in the Location field of the calendar item that was changed.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Exchange Server 2007 expects ASCII characters in the Subject field and in the Location field in this scenario.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Update Rollup 7 for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1.

You can use Group Schedule in Outlook 2007 clients to view a group of users' Free/Busy time information. By default, you can view the Subject field and the Location field of a calendar item if the Default permission level is set to Free/Busy time, subject, location in the calendar.
