Required software updates for Internet Explorer 8.0 on Window Vista RTM

INTRODUCTION

This article describes what to do when you can't install Internet Explorer 8.0 on your Windows Vista RTM computer.
Note Vista SP1 and higher versions do not need any prereqs.


The first part of this article is intended for beginning to intermediate computer users. The "Advanced troubleshooting" section in the second part is intended for more advanced users.

You may find it easier to follow these steps if you print this article first.

THINGS TO TRY

We know how important it is for you to be able to install and use Internet Explorer 8.0, so let's get started.
To Install Internet Explorer on Vista RTM first make sure your computer is up to date. To check for updates, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start

    button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
  3. If any updates are found, click Install updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    Note Install all updates now to make sure that Internet Explorer has everything it has to have to install properly.
  4. Restart your computer.

Now, you can install Internet Explorer 8.0, to do this follow these steps:
  1. Navigate to: http://www.microsoft.com/ie8 (http://www.microsoft.com/ie8)
  2. Click Download Now.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to download and install Internet Explorer 8.0.
  4. Restart your computer.

Advanced Troubleshooting


For more advanced users or if you do not want to install all the available updates, the following two software updates are required before you install Internet Explorer 8.0 on a Windows Vista RTM computer:

Note Make sure that there are no pending updates on the system before you install these updates. Otherwise, you receive the following error message:
The update does not apply to your system.
When you try to install Internet Explorer 8.0 on a Windows Vista RTM computer that does not have these two updates installed, you receive the following error message:
Setup cannot continue because one or more updates required to install Windows Internet Explorer 8.0 are not present. Double-click the "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" shortcut on your desktop to install them separately and then reinstall Windows Internet Explorer 8.0.
