How to access Zune Marketplace wirelessly from your Zune device

There are several steps that you may have to take to enable the Zune Marketplace on your Zune device.

Step 1: Update the device software

Connect the Zune device to a computer that has the current Zune software installed, and then update the device software. For more information about how to update your Zune device, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Step 2: Link your Zune device

Linking your Zune device provides the device all the account information that it requires to use the Zune Marketplace. To link the device, follow these steps:
  1. Connect the Zune device to the computer that is running the Zune software.
  2. Open the Zune software, click Settings, click Device, and then click Linking.
  3. Click Link my Zune to a Zune Tag.
  4. If you also want to purchase content from the Zune device, click to select the Enable Zune Marketplace content purchase from device check box.
  5. Click Next, and then sign in by using your Windows Live ID credentials.
  6. Click OK.

Step 3: Establish a wireless connection on the device

You can establish a wireless connection on the Zune device for your home location. You can do this either through the software on your computer or directly on the device.

To establish a connection for your home location by using your computer, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Zune software on the Windows-based computer.
  2. Connect the Zune device to the computer by using the Zune sync cable.
  3. Click Settings, and then click device.
  4. Click Wireless Sync, and then click Set Up Wireless Sync.
  5. Select a network from the list of networks that are automatically found. Or, click Show Advanced Settings to manually configure the device.
  6. To manually configure the wireless settings, follow these steps:
    1. Enter the name of your wireless network (SSID).
    2. Select a supported Network Type for your wireless network according to the following table.

      corporate networks or networks that use 802.1X, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise, or networks that use certificate or smart card authentication
  7. Click Save Settings.
  8. Enter a network key or pass phrase if you are prompted to do this. Then click OK.
  9. Click Finish.
  10. Disconnect the Zune sync cable.
Note If you want help determining the kind of wireless network that you have or what the network key or pass phrase is, contact the manufacturer of your wireless network equipment.

Step 4: Establish a wireless connection from a mobile location

  1. On the home screen of your Zune device, select Settings, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
  2. Select Wireless, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
  3. Select Networks, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
  4. Select a wireless network that is within range of your Zune.
  5. Enter a network password if the wireless network prompts you to do this.
  6. Press and hold the back button to return to the home screen.
Note You can connect for free at any Wayport-enabled McDonald’s location. The Zune device automatically configures the network location. No password is required. You may be unable to use the Zune device at other locations if those locations require a subscription for use.
If you want help determining what the network key or pass phrase is, contact the manufacturer or service provider of the wireless network.

Step 5: Browse the Zune Marketplace on the device

To browse the Zune Marketplace on your device, follow these steps:
  1. On the home screen of your Zune device, select marketplace, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
  2. Select top songs, top albums, new releases, search, or cart.
  3. Your Zune device will connect to the Zune Marketplace to locate music that matches your interests. You can listen to 30-second clips, buy music, download files, or stream music by using Microsoft Points or a Zune Pass account.
