In Windows Vista SP1 or Windows Server 2008, when you try to play a video by using embedded RealNetworks RealPlayer 11 in Internet Explorer 8 Beta, you are prompted to download RealPlayer even though RealPlayer is successfully installed

On a Windows Vista SP1-based computer or on a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you visit a Web page by using Internet Explorer 8 Beta. When you try to play a video in this Web page by using embedded RealNetworks RealPlayer 11, you receive the following message even though RealPlayer has been installed successfully on the computer: Note This problem does not occur if the computer is running the release-to-market (RTM) version of Windows Vista.

In Windows Vista SP1, the RegQueryValue function was changed to return Error_Success. This behavior apparently breaks RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.

Note The RegQueryValue function in Windows Vista RTM returns INVALID_DATA and does not break RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.

Update information

An update is available to resolve this issue. This update will be automatically downloaded to the RealPlayer 11 Application Compatibility package for Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 through Dynamic Update. After this update is applied, the RegQueryValue function reverts to the value that is returned in the RTM version of Windows Vista.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008 installed on the computer.

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you install this update.

Hotfix replacement information

This update does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this update has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information note

The .manifest files and the .mum files that are installed in each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. These files and their associated .cat (security catalog) files are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The .cat files are signed with a Microsoft digital signature. The attributes of these security files are not listed.
