Description of improvements in functionality that occur in Exchange Web Services operations after you install Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

This article describes improvements in functionality that occur in Exchange Web Services operations after you install Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Before you install Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Web Services items that do not have an associated strong schema type are exposed as "items." After you install the update rollup, these items are exposed as "messages" when you use the following operations:

• SendItems: When you use this operation, you can send items that are not messages.
• UpdateItem: When you use this operation, you can set message-specific properties on items that are not messages. This includes the ability to mark such items as read or as unread.
• GetItem: When you use this operation, it returns items that do not have a strong schema type as "messages" instead of as "items."
• FindItem: When you use this operation, it returns items that do not have a strong schema type as "messages" instead of as "items."
• SyncFolderItems: When you use this operation, it returns items that do not have a strong schema type as "messages" instead of as "items."

Note A strong schema type is a type that is inside the schema and that is dedicated to representing a specific item type, such as MessageType. A store item that has the IPM.Note class maps to "MessageType." Before you install Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 SP1, a store item that has a class other than IPM.Note maps to "ItemType." After you install the update rollup, the store item also maps to "MessageType."
