Error message when you install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on a computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0: "A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported"

SYMPTOMS

If you install the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, every Web part in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 displays the following error message:
Web Part Error: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Web Part Page cannot be displayed or imported because it is not registered on this site as safe.
Additionally, the following event may be logged in the Application log:
Event ID: 1000
Error initializing Safe control - Assembly: Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=11.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c TypeName: * Namespace: Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer Error: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information.

Note The .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is included in Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Therefore, this problem also occurs when Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is installed on a computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, uninstall the following programs:
  • The .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
  • The .NET Framework 3.0
  • The .NET Framework 2.0
Then, install the .NET Framework 2.0 SP1. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
