When you run the Connect to the Internet Wizard you are presented with a screen to configure your router with buttons for Manage Router and Test. This indicates that the Internet connection test failed.

If you click Next on this screen, you get a warning message:

An Internet connection was not found

Some Remote Access services and e-mail services do not work without an Internet Connection

Do you want to continue without an Internet connection?

Cause

This occurs because the CTIW attempts to verify your internet connection by making a DNS request to one of the DNS root hint servers or DNS forwarders configured. If the DNS request fails, the wizard will assume your internet connection is unavailable. This can happen for the following reasons:

• You connect to the internet from behind a proxy server

• This server has no internet connection currently

• The DNS Forwarders are not available (migration scenarios only)

• The Root Hints server list is empty

• The Root Hints servers you tested against are down (extremely unlikely since we test from a random 3)

Resolution

If you are confident that your Internet connection is working or that it will be working and you want to complete the wizard, perform the following steps. click the Test button. After it tests the connection again and fails you are presented with the option to Skip test. Click Skip test to continue and the wizard will complete the configuration the Remote Access and e-mail services.

1. Click No on the warning message.

2. Click the Test button. After the wizard tests the connection again and fails you will be presented with the option to Skip test.

3. Click Skip test and the wizard will complete successfully.

4. Click Finish.

Advanced Steps

To reproduce this behavior, run the CTIW wizard behind a proxy server or when the internet connection is down.
