The reporting functionality in System Center Essentials 2007 Service Pack 1 stops working after you apply security update 948109 on the Windows Essential Business Server Management Server

In a Windows Essential Business Server 2008 environment, you install the security update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: By default, this update is recommended. However, after it is applied on the Windows Essential Business Server Management server, the reporting functionality in System Center Essentials 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) stops working. Additionally, you receive an exception dialog that contains an error message that resembles the following:

An update is available to re-enable the reporting functionality of System Center Essentials 2007 SP1.

How to install this update

To apply this update to System Center Essentials 2007 SP1, follow these steps:

1. Open Control Panel on the Windows Essential Business Server Management server.
2. Open the Windows Update item.
3. Click Check online for updates from Microsoft Update Service.
4. Review the available updates, and then in the list of updates, click to select the update whose name contains 957755, and then click Install.

How to uninstall this update

To uninstall this update, follow these steps:

1. Open Control Panel on Windows Essential Business Server Management Server.
2. Open the Programs and Features item.
3. Click View installed updates.
4. Select the item that has a name that contains 957755, and then click Uninstall.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must have Windows Essential Business Server 2008 and System Center Essentials 2007 SP1 installed.

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

The English version of this update has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. How to manually resolve this problem

To resolve this problem manually, follow these steps:

1. On Windows Essential Business Server Management Server, open a command prompt.
2. Run the following command at the command line window:
   
   %SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config "Default Web Site/ReportServer$SCE" /section:handlers /accessPolicy:Read,Script
3. After the command in step 2 is complete, run the following command at the command line window:
   
   %SystemRoot%\System32\Icacls.exe "%PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\ReportServer\rsreportserver.config" /grant *S-1-5-20:F

To undo the manual resolution manually, follow these steps:

1. On Windows Essential Business Server Management Server, open a command prompt.
2. Run the following command at the command line window:
   
   %SystemRoot%\System32\Icacls.exe "%PROGRAMFILES(X86)%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\ReportServer\rsreportserver.config" /remove:g *S-1-5-20
3. Run the following command at the command line window:
   
   %SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config "Default Web Site/ReportServer$SCE" /section:handlers /accessPolicy:Read
