SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Windows XP, you have a device that is connected through a 1394 FireWire hub. However, after you hot unplug the device, it does not disappear from the system. For example, you have a hard disk connected to the computer through a 1394 FireWire hub. After you hot unplug this hard disk, the drive is still present in Windows Explorer. Additionally, this device still appears in Device Manager.

Note In Windows XP, you can add a device to a computer while the computer is running, and the operating system automatically recognizes the change. This is known as hot plugging. "Hot unplugging" is the reverse of this process.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the device by using the Safely Remove Hardware Wizard. To do this, double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area.
