When you run the Test Xbox LIVE Connection test, a red "X" appears between the Xbox 360 icon and the Network icon. Additionally, the Test Status for Network value is displayed as "Failed."
Note Before you follow any of these methods, make sure that you power cycle (turn off and then restart) all the devices on the network.

How to power cycle home networking devices
When the "Test Fails" message is displayed, click More info to view the first line of the error message. In the following list, click the link that corresponds to the error message that you received. Then, follow the instructions.
Verify that the network cable is connected to your console's network port. Try to unplug the cable, and then plug it back in.
Verify that the device (modem, router, or gateway) that you are connecting to your console is connected and is turned on. Try to plug the network cable into a different network port.
Try to use a different network cable. This will eliminate any faults that affect the network cable.
If you are using the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter, try to unplug the adapter, and then plug it back in. If this does not resolve the problem, try to plug the adapter into another USB port on the console.
Try the following steps to try to resolve the issue. If one step resolves the issue, you are finished. You do not have to complete all the steps.
Review the color of the light indicator on the back of the wireless adapter to determine the status of the adapter.

Description of the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter
Verify that your wireless access point, gateway, or router is turned on.
Verify that the wireless network is not out of range. Put your Xbox console in the same room as the wireless router for testing, and then try again. If this step works, this suggests that you should relocate the wireless router.
Make sure that the security settings on the wireless adapter match the settings on the wireless access point, gateway, or router. For example, your WEP key or WPA passphrase that you enter into the console must match the same passphrase on the router.
Try to reset the Xbox 360 network settings to their default setting, and then start again. To do this, follow these steps:
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Unplug the Xbox 360 wireless adapter from the USB port on the back of the console.
Turn on your Xbox 360 console.
In the Dashboard, select Network Settings, select Additional Settings, and then select Restore to Factory Defaults. This resets the network settings back to their default setting. This does not affect any other console setting.
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Plug the Xbox 360 wireless adapter into the rear USB port.
Turn on your Xbox 360 console.
You should receive a message that indicates that the network adapter is found, and that you must now configure it. To do this, make sure that when you connect to the wireless network, you enter the correct password.
If the wireless network is not listed and is not broadcasting your network name, you must obtain the following three pieces of information from the wireless access point to establish a successful connection:
The network name (SSID)
The security key
The security type
Note The Xbox console currently supports the following security types:
WEP 64bit
WEP 128bit
WPA
WPA 2
No security
Enter the information into the console. To do this, open the Network Settings screen, select the Wireless panel, select Specify unlisted network, and then enter the information that you obtained from your wireless access point.
If you have Media Access Control (MAC) filtering enabled on the wireless router, make sure that you add the MAC address of your Xbox 360 console to the list of allowed MAC addresses on the networking device.
If you use a wireless Ethernet bridge, make sure that you add both the MAC address of your Xbox 360 console and the MAC address of the wireless bridge to the list of allowed MAC addresses on the networking device.
For more information about MAC filtering, see the manual for the networking device, or contact the manufacturer of the device.
For more information about MAC addresses, see step 2 under "Your Xbox 360 console is connected to a modem only (direct connection)" in the next section.

If you use a direct connection between the console and the modem, and if your ISP provides a dynamic IP address (typical), you can configure the network settings in the console to automatically detect the IP address. To do this, follow these steps:
Move to the System Settings area.

On the controller, press B. Then, run the Xbox LIVE connection test again.
If you have to swap the Ethernet cable between your computer and your Xbox 360 console to access Xbox LIVE, you may have to copy the Media Access Control (MAC) address of your computer to your Xbox 360 console. If you know that you have to do this, verify that the MAC address is entered correctly.
A MAC address, or physical address, is an address that uniquely identifies each device on a network. A MAC address is a 12-digit alphanumeric value that appears in the following format:
AA-A1-A2-A3-A4-A5
An Xbox 360 console, a computer, and a printer are examples of devices that can use a MAC address. The MAC address of a specific device is set when the device is manufactured.

How to configure network settings on an Xbox 360 console
Some ISPs may require Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) settings. This means that you may need settings such as a user name and a password to connect to your ISP. If your ISP does require PPPoE settings, verify that you have entered the settings correctly. If your ISP does not require PPPoE, these settings should be left blank. If you are unsure about whether you have to enter these settings, contact your ISP.

How to power cycle home networking devices
If power cycling the modem and router does not resolve the problem, try to connect the Xbox 360 console to Xbox LIVE by using the modem only. This eliminates any configuration problems on the router. If this setup (without the router) works, there is probably a configuration issue that affects the router. See the router documentation, or contact the manufacturer of the router.
Verify that the router's Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service is enabled. DHCP enables the router to assign IP addresses to the computers and to the consoles on the network when you go online. If you require help, see the router documentation, or contact the manufacturer of the router.
If you manually entered an IP address, a gateway, a subnet mask, or DNS server information in the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard, verify that the entries are correct. At this point, you can also set the IP settings to Automatic if the router has DHCP enabled. To do this, follow these steps:
Move to the System Settings area.
Select Network Settings.
Select Configure Network.
Select IP Settings, and then change the setting to Automatic.
If you use the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter, you may have to reset the wireless connection again. This is true especially if you have entered an incorrect password for the network. To reset the wireless connection, follow these steps:
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Unplug the Xbox 360 wireless adapter from the USB port on the back of the console.
Turn on your Xbox 360 console.
In the Dashboard, select Network Settings, select Additional Settings, and then select Restore to Factory Defaults. This resets the network settings back to their default setting. This does not affect any other console setting.
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Plug the Xbox 360 wireless adapter into the rear USB port.
Turn on your Xbox 360 console.
You should receive a message that the network adapter is found, and that you should configure it. To do this, make sure that when you connect to the wireless network, you enter the correct password.
