FIX: Error message when you try to use IIS 7.0 Manager to edit a web.config file that contains an XML fragment which includes xmlns: "Cannot write configuration file"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You publish a Web site application to Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 through IIS 7.0 Manager.
  • You add a connection string for the Web site by using the property Connection Strings in IIS Manager.
  • You edit the connection string and then click OK.
In this scenario, IIS Manager throws a "cannot write configuration file" exception.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the configuration section that you are trying to insert contains an XML fragment which includes xmlns. When you write xmlns back to the .config file, the IIS configuration system misunderstands the configuration section and incorrectly uses the qualified name as the local name.

The exception may occur when you try to edit the applicationhost.config file or the web.config file through IIS 7.0 manager.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008 installed to apply this hotfix.
