SYMPTOMS

When you use a single workflow runtime to run an application that creates lots of workflow instances from different Extensible Object Markup Language (XOML) files, memory usage increases significantly. Additionally, you may receive "Out of memory" error messages.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the System.Workflow.Runtime.WorkflowDefinitionDispenser object does not remove entries from the cache.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem so that you do not receive "Out of memory" error messages, use a new WorkflowRuntime object after the current WorkflowRuntime object creates many workflow instances. For example, use a new WorkflowRuntime after 1,000 workflow instances are created.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
