Bug #: 50003662 (SQL Hotfix)
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you create a new database by clicking New Database in SQL Server Management Studio. SQL Server Management Studio tries to use the model database to create the new database. However, SQL Server Management Studio cannot use the model database. Therefore, SQL Server Management Studio uses the simple recovery model to create the new database. SQL Server Management Studio uses the simple recovery model because of the DatabaseData class.

This issue differs from a similar issue that occurs when you use the CREATE DATABASE Transact-SQL statement to create a new database.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the properties list in the model database is not optimized when SQL Server Management Studio tries to create the new database. Therefore, a user who has the dbcreator role cannot access the model database, and SQL Server Management Studio cannot use the model database to create the new database.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 2. For more information about how to obtain this cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
