Error message when you try to assign an e-mail message to a user from a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 queue: "Activities that have been closed cannot be assigned to another user"

When you try to assign an e-mail message to a user from a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 queue, you receive the following error message:
Activities that have been closed cannot be assigned to another user.
Additionally, if you have enabled the "Platform tracing" functionality, you also receive an error message in the trace log file that resembles the following:
Error: Exception of type System.Web.HttpUnhandledException was thrown.
Error Number: 0x80633100
