An update is available that disables the collection and transfer of Software Quality Metrics data by the Windows Portable Device (WPD) API

The Windows Portable Device (WPD) API collects and transfers a large amount of Software Quality Metrics (SQM) data to Microsoft servers. The SQM data is collected only on an opt-in basis through the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program. To decrease the overall amount of SQM data that is uploaded to Microsoft servers, an update that disables the collection and transfer of SQM data is available.

This update affects Windows Vista-based computers, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computers, and Windows Server 2008-based computers that are in the Microsoft Windows Media Player Customer Experience Improvement Program.

Note This update does not apply to Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems.

64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Server 2008

The WPD API in Windows Server 2008 is installed together with the Desktop Experience feature. By default, the WPD API is not installed.

To use Windows Media Player, the Desktop Experience feature must be installed. To install the Desktop Experience feature, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
2. In the console tree, click Features, and then click Add Features.
3. In the details pane, click to select the Desktop Experience check box.
4. Click Next, and then click Install.
5. Restart the computer to complete the installation.
