You may not be able to add or remove additional namespace servers using the DFS management console in Windows Server 2003 R2

When you try to add an additional DFS namespace server using the dfsmgmt.msc snap-in on Windows Server 2003 R2 you may get an error message similar to the following:

 

"Computer <server> does not belong to domain <domain>"

 

A similar message might be displayed when you attempt to remove a root namespace server:

 

"The namespace \\<domain>\<DFS root> on <server> cannot be detected. Element not

found. Do you want to forcibly remove the namespace server?"

Membership in the listed domain is a by-design requirement for adding additional namespace servers.

In the event that the server being added or removed actually is a member of the specified domain, the issue may have to do with a problem with the Windows Server 2003 R2 version of the dfsmgmt.msc snap-in involving case translation. This problem has been resolved in the Windows Server 2008 version of the snap-in.

To workaround this issue, use one of the following methods:

·         Use the dfsgui.msc snap-in to add/remove the additional namespace server

·         Use the command line tool DFSUTIL to add/remove the additional namespace server:

dfsutil /AddFtRoot /Server:<server name> /Share:<sharename>

dfsutil /unmapFtRoot /root:\\<domain name>\<share name> /Server:<server name>

/Share:<share name>

·         Use the Windows Server 2008 version of the dfsmgmt.msc snap-in (using a machine with the RSAT tools installed).
