SYMPTOMS

When you right-click a Contact to use the Click to Call feature in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 together with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007, the operation is not successful. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
An internal error occurred in the automatic phone dialer. Close the Dial Phone dialog box, and then open it again.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

When you right-click To: in Outlook 2003, the Click to Call feature works correctly. However, when you right-click a Contact to use the Click to Call feature, the operation is not successful.

This behavior occurs because Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) entry points are used in Office Outlook 2003. However, the TAPI entry points are replaced by Instant Messenger (IM) entry points in Office Communicator 2007.

Note This issue does not occur on Outlook 2003 with the latest SP applied or with Office Communicator 2007 R2 with the latest cumulative update package applied.
