Blank keys appear on the On-Screen Keyboard when "Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.) - US keyboard" is selected for the keyboard layout on a computer that runs Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1

On a computer that runs Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1, you apply the following Regional and Language Options settings:

• Current format: Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.)
• Current location: Hong Kong S.A.R.
• Keyboard layout: Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.) - US keyboard

However, when you try to use the On-Screen Keyboard to input some characters, most keys on the On-Screen Keyboard are blank. Sometimes, the On-Screen Keyboard shows U.S.-English keys instead of Chinese Traditional keys. After you switch the keyboard to the U.S. keyboard, blank keys appear.

This problem usually occurs when you input characters in the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) Wizard. It may also occur after you finish the OOBE Wizard and then log on to the system.

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
