Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 provides the following improvements for protecting Microsoft applications and the following resolutions for resolving problems that you might encounter when you use Data Protection Manager 2007 to protect data sources:
  • Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 is built by using an updated version of the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK). This means that Data Protection Manager binaries are created by using libraries that include all security fixes in the updated SDK.
  • You can now seamlessly install protection agents on domain controllers.
  • There are significant improvements in recovery time for Exchange Server and SQL Server data. For example, when data is recovered from a recovery point that includes as many as 100 incremental recovery points, the recovery time improves by 300 percent.
  • Error messages that are related to the prerequisites for protecting data sources are more usable.
  • Consistency checks for Windows SharePoint Server farms are faster.

Note Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 re-validates only those parts of a Windows SharePoint Services replica for which data backup is inconsistent.
  • Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 includes significant improvements for setting up your Data Protection Manager disaster recovery configuration.

Installation instructions

Note Data Protection Manager SP1 cannot be uninstalled. Please perform a full backup of your Data Protection Manager server before you apply the service pack.

Data Protection Manager SP1 consists of three separate updates. To install each update, follow these steps:
  1. Install the SP1 package on the server that is running Data Protection Manager 2007. To do this, run the DataProtectionManager2007-KB959605.exe file on the server.

Note You may first be presented with the installation wizard for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package. Complete the installation wizard. When this wizard is successfully completed, the Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 installation wizard will appear. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

Note You must restart the Data Protection Manager server after you install SP1.
  2. Update the remote SQL Server installation that is hosting the DPMDB database. On the computer that is running SQL Server, perform the following:
    1. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package from the following Microsoft Web site:

      For x86 systems
      http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=117778
      For x64 systems
      http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120135
    2. Run the SqlPrep-KB959605.msp file.
Note These steps are not required if you are running a SQL DPMDB instance on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
  3. On the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console, update the protection agents. There are two methods to update the protection agents on the protected computers:
    • Method 1: Update the protection agents from the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console.
      2. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
      3. Select a computer from the Protected Computer list, and then click Update on the Action pane.
      4. Click Yes in the dialog box, and then click Update Agents.
      5. When receive the Enter Credentials and Reboot option dialog box, enter your credentials, select whether you want to restart the protected server now, and then click OK.

Note You do not have to restart the protected servers immediately. DPM will continue to protect your existing data sources. However, new features that were introduced with System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 will not be enabled until you restart the protected server.
    • Method 2: Update the protection agents on the protected computers.

This is the recommended method for protected computers that are behind a firewall.
      1. Obtain the update protection agent package from the "Data Protection Manager installation location \DPM\Agents\RA\2.0.8793.0" directory on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
        • For the x86 update
          i386\ Language ID \DPMAgentInstaller_KB959605.exe
        • For the x64 update
          amd64\ Language ID \DPMAgentInstaller_KB959605_AMD64.exe
      2. Run the appropriate DPMProtectionAgent2007_KB959605.exe package on each protected computer. You may first be presented with the installation wizard for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package. Complete the installation wizard. When this is successfully completed, the Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 installation wizard appears. Follow the instructions to complete the agent update.
      3. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
      4. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
      5. Select the protected computers, and then verify that the agent version is listed as 2.0.8793.0.

      http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=120135
