SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You find a corrupted volume on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. You run the chkdsk /f command to fix the corrupted volume. In this scenario, the Windows Server 2003-based computer may restart unexpectedly, and you may receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:
Stop 0x00000024 ( parameter1 , parameter2 , parameter3 , parameter4 )
Notes
  • The results of the Stop error message may vary, depending on the system failure settings of the computer.
  • The parameter values of the Stop error message may vary, depending on the computer configuration.
  • Not all "STOP 0x00000024" error messages are caused by the problem that is described in this article.
Additionally, the following event is logged in the System log after this problem occurs:

Event type: Error
Event source: EventLog
Event category: None
Event ID: 6008
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: ComputerName
Description: The previous system shutdown at PreviousTime on PreviousDate was unexpected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Chkdsk.exe utility flushes the target volume. If the target volume is corrupted, NTFS marks the volume with a "dirty" flag. During this process, the Ntfs.sys driver may pass an incorrect stream control block (SCB) pointer to the system. This behavior causes the problem.
