Support for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) ends on July 12, 2011. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2). For more information, refer to this Microsoft web page: Support is ending for some versions of Windows.
Symptoms
You have a computer that runs Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. If you repeatedly restart the computer, some services occasionally do not start. For example, the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service and the DHCP Client service may not start. In this case, the following events are logged in the System log.
Log entry 1Log entry 2These events indicate that the Ancillary Function Driver for Winsock (AFD) driver did not start. However, if you run the MsInfo32 program, and you check the System Drivers information under the Software Environment section, you find that the AFD driver is actually running.
Also, the following event log entries are sometimes recorded.
Note This problem is not specific to the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service or the AFD driver or mountmgr driver.
Cause
This problem occurs because the Services.exe program checks the driver status of services incorrectly.
Resolution
Hotfix information
Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
