FIX: A significant delay occurs after you cancel a query on a client computer that connects to SQL Server 2005 across a slow link

When you cancel a query on a client computer that is connected to a database server that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2005, a significant delay occurs before the cancel operation is effective on the server. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

• The client computer connects to the database server that is running SQL Server 2005 across a slow link.
• The query takes a long time to be completed.
• You cancel the query when it is being executed.

Note In SQL Server 2000, the cancel operation is completed immediately.

Additionally, if you query the sys.sysprocesses view when the query is being canceled, you see a result that resembles the following:

Important You must use this fix if you are running SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2.

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

• Connect to the server by using Remote Desktop Connection, and then run queries locally on the server.
• Set the maximum degree of parallelism (MAXDOP) hint to 1 in Transact-SQL queries.
• Set the MAXDOP option to 1 on the server.
  
  Note We strongly recommend that you do not use this method. This operation may significantly affect the performance of the production systems because all queries will be affected.
