SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You publish a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access (OWA) server by using Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006.
  • You configure the publishing rule to use NTLM delegation.
  • You configure the published server to be part of a Web farm on the server that is running ISA Server 2006.
  • On the OWA server, you install Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007. For more information about Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
935999 Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2007
In this scenario, the users may be unable to access their mailboxes. Additionally, after the users enter the valid credentials on the ISA Server 2006 logon form, they may receive the following error message:
HTTP Status Code: 1359 An internal error occurred

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a change in Update Rollup 3 for Exchange 2007. After you install this update rollup, any request that is sent to the /owa virtual directory without a trailing slash mark (/) receives an HTTP 301 response. The HTTP 301 response redirects the client to the /owa/ virtual directory. However, ISA Server 2006 incorrectly handles the HTTP 301 response when NTLM delegation is used.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix that is mentioned in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
960148 Description of the ISA Server 2006 hotfix package: November 19, 2008

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Configure the publishing rule to use Basic Authentication delegation.

Method 2

Do not use a Web farm. Instead, publish the OWA server as a single Web server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
