On This PageSYMPTOMSIn a network environment, you configure some client computers to use roaming user profiles. In this case, users may become unable to log on from a client computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. The users receive an error message that resembles the following: Unable to log you on because your profile could not be loaded, please contact your administrator. Additionally, the following two application events (event 1508 and event 1502) are logged on the client computer: Event 1508 Log Name: Application

CAUSEThis problem occurs because of a race condition in which the Ntuser.dat file of the user cannot be mounted correctly. RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. WORKAROUNDTo log on to the system by using the user account again, you have to delete the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<User_SID> STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
