FIX: You may not hear the end of an audio file when you play the audio file on a computer that is running Windows Vista

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista, you play an audio file.
  • The playback application uses Media Foundation to render the audio.
  • The last part of the audio file contains distinguishable audio.
In this scenario, you may not hear the end of the audio file. For example, you may not hear the last third of a second of the audio file.

CAUSE

The end-of-stream message is sent to the sound device before the actual end of the rendering of the audio file.

RESOLUTION

Update information

A supported update is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Windows Media Player uses Media Foundation for audio playback of files that are on the local hard disk. Therefore, Windows Media Player is an example of an application in which this problem may occur.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Create a three-second spoken word audio file, and then save the file on the desktop.
  2. In Windows Media Player, open the file.
  3. Play the file to the end, and pay additional attention to the last half-second of audio.
