SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • An application uses the VirtualLock function to lock pages in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.
  • The minimum working set size for the application process is set to a very large value.
  • The system is under a heavy load.
In this scenario, the system may run out of physical pages and may generate Stop error 0x4D.

Note Stop error 0x4D means that no free pages are available to continue operations.

CAUSE

The memory manager only counts leaf pages and does not count page table pages. If many pages are locked in memory, the virtual address control block (VACB) also consumes many pages. Because the memory manager does not count page table pages, the system may run out of physical pages. Therefore, the changed page writer thread cannot swap out pages. Additionally, the system generates Stop error 0x4D.
