Article ID: 960829 - Last Review: December 15, 2008 - Revision: 1.0 Error message when you try to upgrade to System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 Service Pack 1: "Failed to determine status of MDM databases on SQL instance"On This PageSYMPTOMSWhen you try to upgrade a server that is running Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 to Service Pack 1 (SP1), the service pack is not installed. Additionally, you receive the following error message: Failed to determine status of MDM databases on SQL instance 'instance_name'. Setup will now roll back all changes. CAUSEThis problem may occur during the upgrade because System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1 does not have access to the DB_USER and DB_PWD properties that are provided in the earlier installations of Device Management Servers or Enrollment Servers. Instead, System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1 uses the current user's Windows credentials. WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, use one of the following methods. Method 1: Use Windows Integrated AuthenticationUse Windows Integrated Authentication instead of the Microsoft SQL Server user name and password.Note The user who performs the upgrade to System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1 must have sufficient user rights on the server that is running SQL Server and the MDM databases. Method 2: Uninstall System Center Mobile Device ManagerUninstall the existing version of System Center Mobile Device Manager. Do not remove the existing databases during the uninstall process. If you remove the existing databases, the database data will be lost. After MDM is uninstalled, install System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1. During the installation of System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 SP1, the Setup program will give you the option to use the databases from the earlier installation of MDM.
