SymptomAfter adding a Virtual Server 2005 R2 host in SCVMM 2008 users that try to connect to or control existing Virtual Machines on the server might not be able to. For example when trying to start a virtual machine through the Virtual Server Administrative website they may get the following error: “The virtual machine could not be started” CauseThis occurs because SCVMM manages Virtual Machine access through a role based system. When the Virtual Server is added as a managed host the ACL’s for the VM’s files are changed to match the role defined in SCVMM. Therefore the individual user will not have rights to the VM and the “access denied” will prevent the user from controlling or accessing the VM. ResolutionAdd the users to a Self Service User Role in SCVMM. Give them appropriate rights based on the host group (scope) and the desired rights. For details and guidance on this search the SCVMM 2008 product help for “self service user role”. Once the appropriate rights have been assigned users can manage VM’s through either the SCVMM Self Service portal or through the Virtual Server Administrative website.
