FIX: The SQL Server service stops when you run one of the DBCC CHECK commands on a SQL Server 2005 database or when you create a database snapshot for a SQL Server 2005 database

The disk space on a server that stores a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database runs low. When you run one of the DBCC CHECK commands on the database, the memory usage increases on the server. Additionally, the SQL Server service stops.

Or, when you create a database snapshot for a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database, the size of the database snapshot reaches the maximum size of the sparse file limitation. Then, the memory usage increases on the server. Additionally, the SQL Server service stops. This issue occurs even when you recover the database snapshot.

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Run the DBCC command by using the WITH TABLOCK hint.

Method 2

Delete the database snapshot that was created.
