SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows XP, you connect a removable storage device, such as a USB device flash drive, to the computer.
  • Windows XP assigns a drive letter to the removable device in the system device context.
  • You disconnect the removable device from the computer.
  • You map a network drive by using the drive letter that was previously assigned to the removable device.
In this scenario, if you reconnect the removable storage device to the computer, Windows XP cannot find the device.

Note This problem does not occur if you previously installed hotfix KB297694 or applied Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). However, if this problem occurs before you install hotfix KB297694 or apply Windows XP SP3, you cannot resolve this problem by installing the hotfix or by applying Windows XP SP3.
