Gears of War crashes or triggers an error message when you start the game on a Windows Vista-based computer

After you install and then start Microsoft Gears of War on a Windows Vista-based computer, you experience one of the following symptoms:
  • Gears of War exits unexpectedly or crashes.
  • You receive one of the following error messages:
    Gears of War has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
    Game has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    If you click Details on the error message, an error signature that resembles the following is displayed:
    Problem Event name: Appcrash, App Name: wargame-g4wlive.exe


To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Use Games Explorer to start Gears of War

  1. Click Start

    , click All Programs, click Games, and then click Games Explorer.
  2. Right-click Gears of War, and then click Play.
Note To create a shortcut on your desktop for Gears of War, right-click Gears of War in Games Explorer, and then click Pin to Start Menu. Or, drag the shortcut to your desktop.

If this method does not resolve the issue, go on to Method 2.

Method 2: Use the “Run as Administrator” option

  1. Start Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folder:
    Drive\Program Files\Microsoft Game\Gears of War\Binaries
    Note The Drive placeholder represents the letter of the drive on which Gears of War is installed.
  2. Right-click Startup.exe, and then click Run as Administrator.

    Note If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted for confirmation, click Continue.
  3. Click Properties.
  4. On the Compatibility tab, click to select the Run this program as an administrator check box, and then click OK.
  5. Double-click the Startup.exe file to start Gears of War.
Note To create a shortcut for the game, right-click the Startup.exe file, and then click Create Shortcut. When you are prompted to create a shortcut on your desktop, click Yes.
