FIX: An unresolved deadlock occurs when you perform an online reindex operation that runs on parallel threads in SQL Server 2005

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you try to rebuild many indexes in parallel by using the ALTER INDEX statement. In the ALTER INDEX statement, you set the ONLINE argument to ON and set the MAXDOP argument to a value that is larger than 1. When you run the ALTER INDEX statement, a deadlock may occur. You have to restart the SQL Server service to resolve the deadlock. Additionally, error messages that resemble the following may be logged in the SQL Server 2005 error log:

This hotfix contains only those files that are required to correct the issues that this article lists. This hotfix may not contain all the files that you must have to fully update a product to the latest build.

To work around this issue, set the MAXDOP argument to 1 when you use online indexing. However, this method may decrease the indexing performance.
